Second term of Innovation Campus training program completed

April 29, 2021

Within the scope of the “Innovation Campus” training program implemented by Samsung in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme, Istanbul Technical University and Turkish Informatics Foundation, the expert jury selected the most successful projects. The rain water harvesting and irrigation system project titled Smartrain won the first prize, whereas the 3W Watch Water & World that designs household water consumption as a  game-like system became the second, and the robot Pillover that helps senior citizens, became the third best project.

The second term of the “2020-2021 Innovation Campus” training program that is implemented within the scope of the corporate citizenship vision of Samsung Electronics Turkey in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Istanbul Technical University (ITU) and Turkish Informatics Foundation (TBV) has been completed. The jury consisting of experts selected the most creative projects that make the best use of IoT technologies and that best serve the “Sustainable Development Goals” from the perspective of the selection criteria globally determined by Samsung. The rain water harvesting and irrigation system project titled Smartrain won the first prize, whereas the 3W Watch Water & World that designs household water consumption as a  game-like system became the second, and the robot Pillover that helps senior citizens, became the third best project.

IoT-based rain water harvesting and irrigation system

Tolgahan Çepel from Sakarya University and Sümeyye Büşra Şanlı from Istanbul University developed an Internet of Things (IoT)-based rain water harvesting and irrigation system with the Smartrain Project. Through an application, personal computers and mobile devices can be used to monitor and control rain water. With the application that allows the rainwater collected in the gutters to be transferred to the water storage tank traditionally, the amount of rainwater collected and the history of the water level can also be monitored. Within the scope of the project, a greenhouse irrigation system that allows for viewing the 4-day weather forecast and preparation for the rain was also designed. With the application, the temperature and humidity of the greenhouse in addition to soil moisture can be monitored.

Smart water meter card that gamifies household water consumption

The 3W Watch Water & World project developed by Aslı Aykan and Oğuzhan Parmaksız from Boğaziçi University, Mert Karakaya from Doğuş University and Bilge Kağan Özkan from Marmara University is named after the approach “watch the water, watch the world”. The project uses a system that gamifies household water consumption and includes a smart water meter card. For the determination of the amount of water used in houses, the measurement of water quality and the amount of leakage in places such as kitchens and bathrooms, two designs that are structurally similar but fundamentally different from each other were created.  Invoice measurement can be made with the Hydra design, which is planned to replace the meters in the house. The Kraken device, which is installed the kitchen, bathroom and garden, also collects data to save water. Within the scope of the project, two different servers are designated to include subscription, water meter information, logs, invoice screening and payment and to contain the meters and related users' information.

A robot that helps the elderly

Developed by Nefise Uysal from Istanbul Technical University, Şeyma Kotan from Fatih Sultan Mehmet University, Emirhan Kural from Sakarya University and Kaan Uçar from Yıldız Technical University, the helper robot Pillover has a real-time fall detection feature.  Once Pillover detects that a user has fallen down, it sends a notification via e-mail to the person's relatives. With its drug tracking and control feature, which works completely with voice commands, each medicine is recorded according to its name, period and timing, and the user gets notified about the incoming medicine. Voice commands can also be used to notify about the replacement of the medicines that have expired or changed. The system, which monitors environmental values, sends a notification to the relatives of a user if temperature, humidity, flammable gas threshold values are exceeded inside the house. The remote monitoring and notification features also reduce the time of receiving and responding to emergency situations.

The owners of the top three projects selected by the jury won gift cards from Samsung Online Store (shop.samsung.com/tr/). The first prize winners received 10.000 TL, the second prize winners received 5.000 TL and the third prize winners received 2.500 TL gift cards.

25 students received IoT training

The second term of the Innovation Campus training program received more than 4 thousand applications. 25 students that qualified to receive the training were offered 3-month training focused on the Internet of Things (IoT). The trainings coordinated by specialists from ITU were provided with distant learning methods and lasted for 240 hours. 160 hours of the trainings were carried out as lectures and 80 hours as practices and projects. At the end of the training, the students gained the right to enter the competition with applied projects. The students also made use of career coaching, supplies for the projects and mentoring. As a result of the trainings given by ITU experts within Samsung's global curriculum, a total of 20 students received certificates. Including the first term of the program, the total number of students that benefited increased to 50.

This long-term training program will continue also in the upcoming years and the first term applications for the period of 2021–2022  will start to be received in July 2021.
