Ladies and Gentlemen
Allow me to say what a great honor it is for me to be able to participate in this historic commemoration of the 80th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Turkey and Switzerland.
We are deeply grateful for the very constructive role that both Turkey and Switzerland have played—and continue to play-- in facilitating the global activities of the United Nations.
In Turkey, we are delighted to have a fruitful developmental partnership with the Government of Switzerland, especially during the last six years. This partnership has resulted in a positive impact on Turkey’s regional development efforts.
Our partnership with Switzerland in Turkey continues through our new project that focuses on young women and men—especially those from disadvantaged groups and regions. An important component of this project makes available grants for young women and men to finance their innovative ideas for Information Technology use, and skills development in areas such as small enterprises development, and employment in culture and tourism activities. The project focuses on the three pilot provinces of Konya, Mugla and Kocaeli.
This project is in line with the findings of a recent UNDP report on Youth in Turkey, which diagnosed the key constraints facing youth in Turkey, and provided recommendations for improving their well-being.
We are very confident that with UNDP’s significant presence on the ground in Turkey, its past experience with such projects, and its global network of knowledge and experience, this project will be a great success.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Swiss Government for providing the funding for this project, and the Government of Turkey for facilitating the smooth implementation of the project.
Thank you very much.
