The intergovernmental body, which assesses the state of the planet’s biodiversity, ecosystems and the essential services they provide to society, gathers in Antalya.

The second session of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) —which aims to become the leading intergovernmental body for assessing the state of the planet’s biodiversity, ecosystems and the essential services they provide to society— will take place from 9 to 14 December 2013 in Antalya, Turkey, hosted by the Government of Turkey.

The meeting will consider a work programme for the period 2014-18, setting the stage for a first set of proposed fast-track assessments addressing topics such as pollination and food production, land degradation and restoration and invasive alien species, which could become available as early as spring 2015.

The meeting will also discuss a conceptual framework for the Platform and consider how IPBES should engage with stakeholders, leverage the support and expertise of strategic partners, and communicate its work.

Delegates from 138 Member and Observer countries, observers from 89 stakeholder organizations—including science organizations, civil society, the business and industry sector—as well as representatives from indigenous peoples and local communities are expected to attend the meeting, which will be chaired by Professor Zakri Abdul Hamid from Malaysia, who was elected as the first Chair of the Plenary.
