International Convention on Gender Equality starts in Istanbul

An International Convention on Gender Equality, with the theme of Role of Equality Commissions for a More Equal World for All, is to be co-organized by Turkish Grand National Assembly Equal Opportunities Commission for Man and Woman and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), on 24-25 March 2011 in Istanbul.

Celebrating the second anniversary of Turkish Grand National Assembly Equal Opportunities Commission for Man and Woman, the Convention to be organized with kind presence of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, aims to contribute to the enrichment and diversification of the efforts for mainstreaming gender equality in all levels of decision making and daily lives of the citizens.

To this end, the International Convention on Gender Equality is expected to host President of UN
Women Michelle Bachelet; Minister for the Equal Opportunities of Italy Maria Rosaria Carfagna; Head of  the Mission of the League of Arab States Mohammed El Fatah Naciri; Chairpersons of the Equal Opportunities Commissions of the Parliaments and Ombudsmans  from various countries from the world as Canada, Austria, South Africa, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Germany; Members of Parliaments; representatives from international society including different institutions of the United Nations; European Parliament; Inter-Parliamentary Union; Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union; concerned public institutions; national and international civil society organisations; private sector representatives; academicians, artists and media representatives.

The Convention is designed to discuss different issues on gender equality and exchange of knowledge
and experiences among international and national participants in seven separate sessions. Therefore,
the Convention  is considered to be an important platform that is expected to be hosted by diverse
countries in the future.
