Turkey prepares its Second National Communication to the UNFCCC
The kick-off meeting for the “Enabling Activities for the Preparation of Turkey’s Second National Communication to the UNFCCC” was held on 23 November 2010 in Ankara.
Following opening speeches by the Deputy Undersecretary of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry and UNDP Deputy Resident Representative, participants received information on the objectives and activities of the project.
The overall aim of the project, which will be led by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (MoEF), supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and funded by the Global Environment Fund (GEF) is to assist the Republic of Turkey in the implementation of obligations under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The concrete result of the Project will be the preparation of Turkey’s Second National Communication.
The Project forms an important input in supporting Government of Turkey to fulfill its commitments under the Convention and in strengthening the country’s technical and institutional capacities in the area of climate change.
Parties to the Convention are obliged to submit periodical national communications to the UNFCCC. The content of the communication, which includes chapters on national circumstances, climate change vulnerability assessment, financial resources and technology transfer, education, training and public awareness, differs according to the Parties’ status under the Convention.
A party to the Convention since 2004, Turkey submitted its First National Communication to the UNFCCC in 2007. As a result of the Project, the Second National Communication will be submitted to the UNFCCC by the end of 2011.
