'Volunteering matters – Light-up our world'

01 Dec 2011

UNV has launched a six week online initiative to mobilize volunteers around the world in marking International Volunteer Day (IVD) 2011 in 5th of December, under the title Volunteering Matters.

New Horizons - The campaign will culminate in a striking digital mosaic or “snapshot” of our volunteering world, which will be revealed on 7 December.

The objective of the campaign is to show why volunteering matters in the lead up to the UN General Assembly session and the launch of the State of the World Volunteering report on 5 December.

The campaign also wants to engage volunteers in discussing key volunteer issues emerging, and to recognise their efforts.

All this will be done through a mix of discussion-point videos, photo competition and bold social media engagement, all coming together on a dedicated and interactive webpage.

Virtual participation from all corners of our globe will “light up our world” with photographs and testimonies of ongoing volunteer action.

When a photo is submitted from a particular country, that country will light-up on an interactive map.

The aim is to collect a photo from every country in the world.

Out of the submitted photos, 18 most compelling photos will be shortlisted for a photo competition.

UNV Facebook fans will vote from 6 to 7 December for their favourite photo to win and become the UNV Facebook profile picture for 2012.

There is still time to get involved before the campaign ends on 7 December.

Visit the campaign website, submit your photos, watch weekly volunteering videos and contribute to the discussion.
