    Turkey's electrical appliances are now more efficient

    Turkey’s large population and steady economic growth are important drivers of the electrical appliance market. Residential electricity consumption has reached almost 36 thousand gigawatts per hour in 2007, an amount equal to over 20 metric tons of CO2. Given the rising trend in energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in the country, the “Market Transformation of Energy Efficient Appliances in Turkey Project” emerges as one of the major efforts in reducing household energy consumption and fighting climate change.

    Towards a more independent judiciary

    On November 1-3, 2010, presidents and other representatives of Supreme Courts met at the International Summit of High Courts in Istanbul to discuss the fundamental issues of judicial reform. Nineteen high level judicial representatives from countries in all four corners of the world, including Argentina, Indonesia, Poland, and Egypt came up with principles and practices that were agreed as being fundamental elements of the rule of law.

    Higher income is not enough for human development

    In the 20th anniversary edition of the Human Development Report, the United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP) newly adjusted Human Development Index (HDI) indicates that with a value of 0.679, Turkey is listed among countries in the “High Human Development” category, ranking 83rd out of 169 countries. Due to the methodological refinements, the 2010 country rankings are not comparable to those from previous years.
