A new tool for encouraging female high school students to select engineering departments in university

Within the context of Turkey’s Engineer Girls (TEG) Project, a partnership with Middle East Technical University’s Interdisciplinary Design Studio has been started to design a campaign for high school students to encourage them to select engineering departments in university.

METU Design Studio brought together researchers and students from design studies, engineering sciences, social sciences, and other related fields in order to develop new and innovative products. Through this interdisciplinary collaboration, within 10 weeks of educational semester, Design Studio developed a tool to be used to change the perception determined by gender stereotypes within the high schools students and their families.

Idea development, design and prototyping phases were conducted by a team of students from different departments and mentored by two academic and one industry mentor in Design Studio. During the designing phase Design Studio team met TEG project team many times and as a result of collaborative working and design thinking approach a board game was designed. The final prototype is planned to be used in the high school campaigns of the TEG Project in order to increase awareness of female high school students for selection of engineering profession. This prototype will be improved and is planned to be used in pilot high schools.

Turkey’s Engineer Girls (TEG) Project which is implemented in cooperation with UNDP, Ministry of Family and Social Policies and Limak Foundation, aims at development of private sector led prototypes for inclusive and sustainable economic growth in the services and manufacturing sectors benefiting from gender equality mainstreaming and advocacy and dissemination of the success stories within the public and private sector.
