Message of Sharapova on Chernobyl
UNDP Goodwill Ambassador Maria Sharapova marked Chernobyl anniversary with a message of hope.
Geneva - In a global online video address published today in advance of the 25th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova expresses her solidarity with hundreds of thousands of people who were uprooted from their homes surrounding the site.
Sharapova has been a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), since 2007.
Her family was displaced from Gomel, one of the affected areas in Belarus, in the wake of the 1986 disaster.
“We stand in solidarity with those affected by the tragedy,” says Sharapova in the video.
“Today, while the anniversary is filled with sadness, we also acknowledge that this is a time for hope, as we move forward in building a better future for all those whose lives have been changed by this tragedy.”
