Climate Change, Adaptation Policies and Turkey Certified Training Programme begins
A Climate Change, Adaptation Policies and Turkey Certified Training Programme has been initiated in cooperation with the Middle East Technical University Earth System Sciences Institute and the United Nations Joint Programme on Enhancing the Capacity of Turkey to Adapt to Climate Change. The training programme will begin on 20 September 2010 and will be carried out at the METU Continuing Education Centre.
The Climate Change, Adaptation Policies and Turkey Certified Training Programme aims to provide training to the employees of public and private sector institutions, universities, research institutions and NGOs on “climate change, impacts of climate change and adaptation to these impacts, adaptation strategy, adaptation policies and planning, the understanding of the social, communal and economic dimensions of adaptation, Turkey’s status and the interaction between climate change policies and sustainable development policies” as well as to build capacity in this field, ensure the implementation of scientific studies, project management and decision-making mechanisms and to establish human resources for implementing agencies.
Atila Uras, Enhancing the Capacity of Turkey to Adapt to Climate Change UN Joint Programme Manager, stated that establishing a short-term training programme that will ensure the training of people and groups, - with a scientific approach - working in the fields of climate change and adaptation in public institutions, the private sector, universities, research institutions and NGOs during the process of climate change adaptation is a necessity and that the cooperation established with the METU Earth System Sciences Institute would contribute to capacity building in this area.
The Certificate Programme is composed of four modules and participation price for the programme is 3.500 TL. A scholarship will also be awarded by the UN Joint Programme on Enhancing the Capacity of Turkey to Adapt to Climate Change to a limited number of participants from public institutions, universities, civil society and vocational institutions. The Advisory Committee of the Programme will evaluate scholarship applications and will inform candidates prior to the programme calendar. In addition a 20% discount will be provided for public institutions’ staff.
The planned time span of the training programme is four weeks (105 hours). Student will learn from a team of 44 experts and academics. Interactive courses will be provided during the first three weeks of the training programme and on the fourth week participants will realize a project study on their personal field of interest or in the areas of the institutions they work, in compliance to the subjects of the training programme. At the end of the programme, participants will be provided with certificates or a participation document based on their examination scores.
