    Legal framework efforts to serve poor better

    1st Microfinance roundtable was held on the 4th of August 2005. Being the first of the thematic roundtables to be held on a monthly basis, this meeting had the particular focus on microfinance legal framework. The roundtable was very well attended; along with the National Committee members there was participation from commercial banks as well as other financial institutions and NGOs.

    A new initiative to reach the poor

    Turkey is forming a National Committee to examine how to bring quality financial services to low income households. The UN Secretary General invited all member states to set up National Committees, as a part of the International Year of Microcredit, which is a global effort to build support for making financial services more accessible to poor and low income people.

    New initiatives launched to increase the amount of youth fund

    In the framework of the 'Hayata Arti' Youth Program, Coca Cola have launched an exhibition in Akmerkez Shopping Mall in Istanbul. Worldwide famous Turkish fashion designers designed giant Coca Cola bottles for the exhibition called 'Coca Cola Bottles Reflect Life.' Elif Cigizoglu, Dice Kayek, Hakan Yildirim, Rifat Özbek, Ümit Ünal and Yazbukey interpreted "life" on the bottles.

    Turkey adopts tsunami-struck island in Maldives

    A far-flung island community in the Maldives can now restore its lifeline to essential markets and supplies, thanks to a helping hand extended by the Government of Turkey. It is anticipated that dozens of other communities will soon get similar assistance through the United Nations Development Programme's (UNDP) Adopt-an-Island initiative, which enables governments, the private sector or individuals to directly help people in the Maldives to rebuild homes, infrastructure, or to regain their livelihoods.
