South-South Cooperation

South-South Cooperation is a powerful tool for building new partnerships and creating more equitable forms of global interdependence and governance.

Over the past 30 years, there has been a remarkable upsurge in South-South cooperation. Sustained economic growth since the late 1980s has led to an increasing number of developing countries becoming regional centers of economic dynamism. UNDP has played a leading role in promoting South-South exchanges by supporting Turkey`s efforts to share its successful experience in the field of democratic governance, particularly focusing on parliamentary development, e-governance, judicial reform, local administration reform and gender equality with other developing countries, particularly those in Arab States, Asia, Europe and the Commonwealth of Independence States (CIS)

South-South Cooperation (SSC) involves developing countries working together to find solutions to prevailing development challenges. Linked by commonalities in their history and geography, the countries of the South have important lessons to share from which other developing nations can learn. South-South Cooperation promotes closer technical and economic cooperation among developing countries by allowing them to share best practices and to diversify and expand their development options and economic links. It is a powerful tool for building new partnerships and creating more democratic and equitable forms of global interdependence and governance.

In the context of Turkey, in light with the priority issues addressed in national policy frameworks, UNDP Turkey has been a strong advocate of regional cooperation which positively affect trade, investment, and economic, political and information exchange between participating nations. Based on these comparative strengths and taking into account lessons from experience, UNDP Democratic Governance Portfolio supports South South cooperation through:

- leveraging its network of country offices in support of facilitating the exchange of knowledge and experience in fields of parliamentary development, e-governance, judicial reform, local administration reform and gender equality among the countries in the region,

- assisting the countries in the region in identifying, documenting and disseminating the experiences as well as the good practices in relevant areas of democratic governance, including through the establishment of platforms for exchange of experience and study visits,

- supporting the countries in the region, at their request, in developing bilateral relations with the relevant institutions in Turkey during their reform processes, particularly in form of institutional and administrative restructuring.
